This is a really nice vintage book. William Thackeray was already a famous literary figure when he wrote and illustrated this story more than 100 years ago. He called it a fireside pantomime and that exactly describes its mixture of fairy tale and humor, of fantasy and slapstick. There are some books which every child ought to have a chance to read before the age of 10. This is one of them. It is also wonderful for reading aloud to the under eight.
