The Brumby by Mary Elwyn Patchett - Puffin Books 1973
The Brumby by Mary Elwyn Patchett - Puffin Books 1973
The Brumby of this story was a wild Australian stallion, by chance born near the home of a lonely boy and capturing his imagination with such intensity that he could think and dream of nothing but one day building up a herd of sturdy silver Brumbies. But to the Australian stockmen among whom he lived all Brumbies were wild, vicious, untamable animals fit only to be hunted, and young Joey had to endure seeing his beloved foal grow up into a Savage outlaw and finally a killer. Nevertheless his dream comes true in the end, although not quite as he'd imagined it. This book has wonderful descriptions of the Australian bush, and of the ways of its men and animals. But it is powerful and sometimes violent in the telling and best suited to readers of 10 years and over. A really nice vintage puffin book, great for anyone collecting vintage childrens books.
