This is a fantastic vintage childrens book, published by Puffin Books. Juan de Pareja was born into slavery early in the seventeenth century. He was orphaned when he was five years old and when his mistress died of plague she left him in her will to her Nephew who lived in Madrid. This fascinating and unusual book won the Newbery medal in 1966.
