Hills End by Ivan Southall, Vintage Puffin book 1970

A nice vintage children's book published by Puffin Books. There was no indication on that sun drenched morning that little Australian timber town of Hills End was doomed. Yet while most of its people were on a picnic and seven of its children were searching nearby caves for Aboriginal drawings, the sky became glazed over with a bronze sheen, a cloud reached out of the North like a black arm and closed its hand around the sun, and the dark waters of the river flooded over the rock pan between town and Hills. When the children had struggled back to Hills End they found it deserted and destroyed. None of the children were Heroes, and none of them realized how wonderful their parents were till there weren't there. Yet they survived, partly by drawing on strength they had not known they possessed and partly by determination. This is an absolutely riveting Story full of suspense which will appeal especially to boys Over ten.
