Gogol, The Diary Of A Madman And Other Stories, Penguin Classics
The five tales in this volume are set in the Ukraine where Gogol was born in 1809 and in St Petersburg, the strange, alienating, unreal City that's so fascinated Russian writers from pushkin onwards. Diary of a Madman is a frighteningly real account of The descent of a personality through obsession and fantasy into madness. As in the Overcoat and The Nose, the background for the stories provided by another subject favored by Russian writers, the rigid hierarchy of the Tsarist bureaucracy. The two Ukrainian tales, however, reveal Gogols roots in the Russian folk tradition, with its mixture of grotesque humour, exuberant language and deep melancholy.
