This is a really nice vintage children's book, published by Puffin Books. It tells the true life story of thirteen year old John Seger, who, with his family, was part of a covered wagon band of settlers who set out for the Far West of America in the summer of 1844. His parents died on the journey and the other pioneers decided to turn off and take the easiest way to California, but John with his six younger brothers and sisters left the safety of the wagon train to keep faith with his father's dream of opening up the west for American settlers, together the children made the almost unbelievable journey across two rivers through hostile Indian territory and over the Cascade Mountains. The story of the appalling hardships which they endured and of the outcome of their courage, can be read in this magnificently written tale.
